Rockin’ Rebels

“Rebel Without a Cause” staring the dreamy James Dean premiered on this date in 1955. Lots of artists have used music to rebel, today as we explore in the FUV question of the day.

Hmmm. A rebel song.
WHO BETTER to sing about rebellion than…
BOB DYLAN??
NO surprise there.
JUST SO MANY of his songs to choose from.
The best, I think, is…
The Times They Are a Changin’
You agree?
Oh, I do hope so!!
Play him and Go ahead, make my day!!!
I fought the Law – John Mellencamp or The Clash
Get Up Stand Up – Bob Marley and the Wailers “stand up for your rights! Don’t give up the fight!”
Jack and Diane – Mellencamp has a line in there that says “trying to do my best James Dean”
Of course, the obvious Rebel, Rebel – David Bowie
You haven’t done nothin. Stevie Wonder
The revolutionwill not be televised. Gil Scott Heron
rebels struck a chord and we immediately thought of two:
Richard Thomson, “1952 Vincent Black Lightning”
Janice Jophlin, “Me and Bobby McGee”
Love your show. Keep up the good work – - -
The Rebel Jesus Jackson Browne
Rebel, Rebel David Bowie
OK so David bowie is ridiculously obvious, but what the heck. The Rebel Jesus seems somewhat appropriate that is not even Halloween and I see Christmas items at the local supermarket and all of those catalogs are filling the mailbox.
“No Surrender” by Bruce Springsteen, “It Ain’t Me Babe” by Dylan and “I Don’t Want to Grow Up” by Tom Waits.
Almost Cut My Hair
CSNY
It kept me away from the barber for about 8 months during my sophomore year in college
Rebels Songs –
“Rebel-Rebel” (David Bowie)
“He’s a Rebel” (The Crystals)
“The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” (The Band)
“Gettysburg” (The Brandos)
Showing my age….. but
He’s a Rebel The Crystals
Great song by Darlene Love who , by the way, will perform with Bruce Springsteen at this Thursday’s RR Hall of Fame Show (Sam Moore from Sam & Dave fame will also perform with Bruce).
Sometimes I think you’re just goading me to show my age, but what the heck, I still say you’ll never find a better decade for music than the 60’s, and the Girl Groups were a big part of it. Here are just two great Girl Group songs about rebels — I can see you playing “He’s A Rebel” by the Crystals; but “Leader of the Pack” by the Shangri-Las — now playing that would really make YOU a rebel!
Bob Marley comes immediately to mind, with a bunch of choices. A couple of standouts would be…
“Get Up Stand Up”
“Rebel Music (3 O’clock, Roadblock)”
A great David Bowie entry is “Rebel Rebel”
From the early days, The Crystals cover of Gene Pitney’s “He’s a Rebel”
And from the dawn of time, the theme song to the very brief (1959-1961) TV show “The Rebel”. “Johnny Yuma Was a Rebel”
Bang on the drum all day. Todd Rundgren
“Ain’t Gonna Come Till I’m Raady” by World Party
“Hate It Here” by Wilco
“I Live On A Battlefield” by Nick Lowe
How about baba o riley from the Who.
Have a great day
A most forgotten, ‘Rebel’ song –
‘Rebel Rouser’ (Duane Eddy)
What are you rebelling against? What d’ya got?
Mama Merle Haggard Mama Tried
Johnny Cash Don’t take you guns to town
Close Minded
Small Town upbringing Bronski Beat Small Town Boy
The Law the Clash I Fought the law
Conformity the Clash The Clampdown
Rage Against the Machine You got to do what they told ya
Dad / Everything Steve Earle The Other Kind “there’s the kind that break and bend…..I’m the Other kind.”
Street Fighting Man–Rolling stones
Mama Tried—Grateful dead
Folsom Prison Blues—Johnny Cash
I Fought The Law—Bobby Fuller 4
Rebel Rebel—Bowie
and from the woman’s perspective:
(I Don’t Give A Damn ’bout My) Bad Reputation—Joan Jett
Out In The Streets (please play this one) or Leader Of The Pack—Shangri-Las
Here’s a gorgeous, soulful song about a quiet rebellion: Catie Curtis’ Radical.
Then there’s Springsteen’s Growing Up.
Anyway, I’m sure there are a ton from that most rebellious era, the 60s, but being late to that game none are coming to me right now.
Have a compliant day ;)
Good morning!
“Into the Great Wide Open” TP&tHB
“I Fought the Law” The Clash
“Get Up, Stand Up” Marley
Fight the Monday!!!
Since you asked :-)
I’d like to hear “I’m No Angel,” by Gregg Allman.
There are thre great classes of popular rebel songs;
Irish i.e. Boulavogue
Reggae i.e. Get Up Stand Up
Zappa. see below:
Only the real radio rebel
Would even play Zappa.
Zappa is still banned
From Walmart;
Not because of any
“Suggestive lyrics” (They now sell rap.)
No,
Because of “subversive lyrics.”
Not subversive to our country,
But subversive to
The way things are.
The way we function
As a corpocracy.
Here ars my choices for a nice Frank Zappa song:
Brown Shoes Don’t Make It
or
Absolutely Free
Good morning all!
Ok, here goes a few thoughts:
“He’s a Rebel” (Gene Pitney) recorded by the Crystals, one of Phil Spectors ‘Wall of Sound’ groups and a seminal song, in that it marked a shift in girl group emphasis towards loving the ‘bad boy’.
“Leader of the Pack”, Shangri-Las (the ‘bad girls’ from Queens)
“I’m gonna get me a Gun” , Cat Stevens, a little departure from “Peace Train”
“Bad to the Bone” by George Thorogood
“Freefalling” Tom Petty
“I’m Eighteen” Alice Cooper
Rebellious songs?! My God, how about all of rock and roll? OK, here goes:
The Kinks, on the Lola album, the last cut – Got to Be Free. It has the best, most rebellious lines ever – “Got to be free, and it won’t be long, ’cause we are right, and they are wrong.” That sums it up.
How about the song from the TV show, Johnny Yuma the Rebel, I think Johnny Cash recorded it.
This is wild – Groucho Marx singing Whatever it is I’m Against it in Horsefeathers.
On David Crosby’s If I Could only Remember my Name, there’s this song with a lot of great music (Jerry Garcia, Neil Young) and then they all (Grace Slick, Neil, etc.) sing something like I wonder who they are, the men who really run this land, and why they run it with such a careless hand… something like… I wonder where they live, I’m gonna go right over there and tell them off. It is awesome!
Van Diemen’s Land, U2 on Rattle and Hum, my favorite U2 song (sorry, Bono). “Honest Man can earn an honest wage”, great lyrics.
“You could have Been More” than a sign on the door on the 34th (?) floor Joni Mitchell.
5 to 1, the Doors. I can’t remember the words, but I think The Chambers’ Brothers Time Has Come Today fits the bill. Obvious: Won’t Get Fooled Again.
Fortunate Son, Credence.
Volunteers for America (“Gotta Revolution”) by the Airplane, from Woodstock. And if we are at Woodstock, Jimi’s Star Spangled Banner – come on, go for it!
This is easy, but The Times They are a Changin’, no, Masters of War, no, It’s all right Ma. I better stop now.
Dying to hear what you do play today.
“Into the Great Wide Open” Tom Petty
“Billy and Bonnie” Steve Earle
-Thanks!
More info on He’s a Rebel. Interesting tidbit
Written by: Gene Pitney
Produced by: Phil Spector
Released: Aug. ‘62 on Philles
Charts: 18 weeks
Top spot: No. 1
The Crystals were from Brooklyn, but Spector had bolted New York for Los Angeles to record “He’s a Rebel.” Worried that someone else would cut it first, he didn’t wait for the the original Crystals to fly out. Instead he recorded this celebration of teenage bad boys with Darlene Love and the Blossoms under the Crystals name. A humbling footnote: Spector was just twenty-one years old.
Appears on: Best of the Crystals (ABKCO)
Flowers In The Night from the album Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun by Paul Kantner, Grace Slick and David Freiburg.
